A stylish family garden in Queens Park, Bournemouth - designed and planted by Janine Pattison All About… Janine Pattison - Garden Designer I have been gardening all my life having been introduced to growing plants from seeds and cuttings by my parents at a very early age. My portion of the garden was a treasured space and I would race home from school to tend it each day. I trained with English Heritage and have studied at Hadlow College in Kent, Kingston Maurward College in Dorchester and most recently, Sparsholt College in Winchester. I was awarded the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society’s Advanced Certificate in Horticulture. This qualification allied with my design skills means that I can offer a comprehensive garden design, horticultural consultancy and planting service to clients in Dorset and further afield if necessary. Since 2001 I have been running my own business here in Dorset, and have experience of creating and working in dozens of gardens from tiny courtyards to country gardens of several acres. A lovely tranquil 'Secret Garden' in Christchurch - part of a large garden completed May 2008 I offer a personal service with each garden and its owners treated as a unique, individual project. Most of my clients, when they first approach me, have a list of things they want in their garden (eg patio, water feature, play area, etc) but little idea of what they want from their garden – how to make it all work together. Without an overall design, it is too easy for a garden to be just a collection of objects – in short, a space without a soul. It is my job as the garden designer to mould the space so that it becomes a place, with its own character and atmosphere. The design needs to have three things to really work. They are: a sense of unity – to tie together all those ‘must have’ features harmony, so that you feel comfortable , and perhaps most importantly, a sense of place, so that your garden is unique, a part of your life A well designed garden will not only give you an extra outdoor room. Many clients have said with pleasure and surprise that the new garden has changed the way they live their lives for the better. A fabulous, elegant garden in Wimborne, designed and planted by Janine Pattison Working with your Garden Designer It is important for client and designer to have a good relationship. I like to spend time talking with new clients, including both ‘halves’ of a couple, and family too where appropriate. It helps me if I know as much background as possible, to build up a rounded picture of who will be using the garden. Every client and every site is different, and I enjoy that variety. I always keep in mind that it is your garden and has to respond to your brief and tastes. Consequently, I do not slavishly follow a particular style, and am happy creating sleek minimalist spaces, historically accurate gardens for period properties or informal Mediterranean terraces. The basic principles of good design are common to all, and I work hard to interpret your wishes in accordance with these principles. I offer a free, no obligation initial consultation to discuss your requirements to clients within 20 miles of Bournemouth. Clients further away will be asked to contribute to travelling costs. (Currently this is 40 pence per mile). Please feel free to contact me and arrange a consultation. All fees and costs are agreed in advance of work commencing so that the Client remains in control at all times. Please contact janine@little-eden.biz for more information or to arrange a visit. Many clients are happy for a site board to be placed on view for a few weeks after the new garden has been completed. The majority of new work comes in due to recommendations from satisfied clients.
